    Parent and guardian participation on hiring teams at our school is a longstanding tradition and honor. The time commitment to be on a hiring team is about four to six hours per year. Please consider this opportunity to serve!

    Get on the hiring list

    Here’s how it works:


    1. Parents must first take a one-hour District training. We try to get an onsite training each year at Thornton Creek or a neighboring school. And the training also takes place one day per month at the John Stanford Center, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
    1. Parents then provide information to the Site Council Hiring Committee, through an online survey. At this point, you’re part of the hiring team list!
    1. When a hiring need arises, the Site Council Hiring Committee randomizes the list and uses our EDI policy and position-specific criteria to offer the opportunity to the first qualifying parent, moving down the list until we find a parent who can serve on the team.

    Common questions

    Who do parents help hire?

    Assistant principal (two parents), behavioral learning specialists, classroom teachers, counselors, intervention and support teachers, nurses, principal (two parents usually, though this process is District-led), and others on request.


    What does serving on a hiring team involve?

    You’ll preview resumes, then sit in on three or four interviews after school (all on the same day, usually). Sometimes there are second interviews for final candidates.


    What if my schedule doesn’t allow me to join a hiring team when called?

    No problem. We’ll keep you on the list for future opportunities. ​

    I don’t have any experience hiring people. Why do you need me?

    Your experience at Thornton Creek and your unique family characteristics are all you need. The District training covers the basic process. And you’ll always be part of a larger hiring team, with other Thornton Creek teachers and staff.

    What do you mean you’re looking for people who represent the diversity of our community?

    We want to make sure our hiring pool is inclusive. We are looking for diversity, including but not limited to: ability status, ages of children, ethnicity/race, family composition, gender, religion, school experience (only TC versus other schools), services used (for example, special ed), socioeconomic status.


    What is the time commitment for serving on a hiring team?

    Four to six hours per year:

    • Preview resumes: 1 hour or less.
    • First interviews: 3 to 4 hours in one day, often after school, from 3 to 6:30 p.m.; 8:00 p.m. latest.
    • (Occasional) second interviews: 1 to 2 hours in one day.

    How do I take the district training?

    District hiring trainings are held once a month throughout the school year. Pre-register by emailing your name, email, and phone number to Seattle Education Association: SEA@WashingtonEA.org or DBrady@Washingtonea.org.

    Do I have to take the district training every year to stay on the list?

    No. Once you take the training, you do not have to retake it. And you’re qualified for hiring at any SPS school.
