    District: Thornton Creek Leadership update
    Posted on 07/12/2019

    Dear Thornton Creek Elementary community,

I hope summer break is off to a great start for your family! I am writing to announce that I have asked Principal Jonathan Gasbar to take on the role of leading Cedar Park Elementary, and he has graciously agreed to step into this new opportunity as the school continues their efforts to growing the school and program. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Doug Ouellette has been appointed as the new principal for Thornton Creek Elementary. I believe that Mr. Ouellette’s commitment to the Expeditionary Learning program, his ability to co-create a vision with and for school community, and his dedication to collaboration with staff at all levels make him the ideal leader to build on Principal Gasbar’s work and meet the unique needs of this school now and into the future.

Mr. Ouellette is a seasoned leader within Seattle Public Schools who most recently opened Cedar Park Elementary as an option school with a focus on Expeditionary Learning. His work opening a new school included deep engagement with the staff and families to develop a model for shared leadership at the building level. He has shared his expertise in school governance through district-wide BLT (Building Leadership Team) trainings for school leaders. Principal Ouellette is a hands-on instructional leader who brings his passion and expertise in early literacy; positive and inclusive social- emotional learning environments; and collaborative, data-driven adult professional learning communities (PLCs) to ensure strong outcomes for all students. He is committed to building a leadership system with clear expectations and shared decision-making and to growing staff into leaders. Mr. Ouellette embodies the values that the Thornton Creek community holds and is looking forward to working closely with the staff and community.

Principal Ouellette served as the principal at Cedar Park Elementary since 2017. He previously served as the principal at Wedgwood Elementary and the Assistant Principal at Catharine Blaine K-8 for the two years prior. Mr. Ouellette earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and Master of Teaching degrees and Principal Certification from the Washington State University system and taught in the Richland and Kennewick school districts before joining Seattle Public Schools in 2012.

Principal Ouellette’s dedication to collaborative problem solving and his experience leading a school with an Expeditionary Learning focus will be a great fit for Thornton Creek Elementary. Principal Ouellette will be joining Thornton Creek at the end of July.

Please join me in welcoming Principal Doug Ouellette to Thornton Creek Elementary.
